How sales tax is calculated
Tax = price ร rate ยท Total = price + tax
To work backwards from a total that already includes tax:
Price before tax = total รท (1 + rate)
Worked example at 8.25%
- Adding tax: a $250.00 purchase has $20.63 of tax, for a total of $270.63.
- Removing tax: a $250.00 total contains $19.05 of tax, so the price before tax was $230.95.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the tax rate written as a decimal. At 8.25%, a $100 purchase has $8.25 of tax, for a total of $108.25.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. A $108.25 total at 8.25% is $108.25 รท 1.0825 = $100 before tax. Choose 'Remove sales tax from a total' in the calculator to do this.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska lets local governments charge their own.
Why is the rate in my city different from the state rate shown?
Cities, counties and special districts often add their own sales tax. The calculator starts with the state rate plus the population-weighted average local rate, so your exact address may be higher or lower. Type your own rate to override it.
Is everything taxed at the same rate?
No. Many states exempt or reduce the tax on groceries, prescription drugs and clothing, and some tax services differently from goods.
